Tammy works toward independence through Transitional Living program

December 13, 2010

Tammy is working toward being independent.

She wants to succeed.

Tammy, left, continues to work towards meeting her goals with her Youth Villages counselor Tammy Robbins.

During her time in Youth Villages’ transitional living program, Tammy has been able to maintain employment with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and Restaurant, and continually receives positive feedback from her customers. She has obtained her driver’s permit, license and insurance. Help along the way came from her foster parent, a North Carolina Division of Social Services worker, school staff and her Youth Villages counselors.

Tammy is also learning key life skills such as money management and, ultimately, her goal is to obtain housing and live independently.

“I love the way Youth Villages has helped me become more confident and self motivated,” Tammy said. “They have decreased my timidity about moving on in life by myself.”

Last June, she was awarded student of the month at her school. She set a goal of graduating from high school and on Wednesday, June 9, achieved that goal – walking across the stage and receiving her diploma.

Now, Tammy plans to pursue a career in barbering, and has enrolled at the Park West Barber College in Durham, N.C. She expects to finish by July 2011.

After completing barber school, Tammy would like to enroll in a four-year program and study criminal justice.

“I have no doubt that Tammy will be successful,” said Transitional Living Program Specialist Tammy Robbins. “She’s continually met all the goals we’ve set together and has a bright future ahead of her.”
