AmeriCorps members start off into new service year at Youth Villages

September 30, 2011

The Youth Villages AmeriCorps team’s first day of service was the Inner Harbour playground build day.

“This was a unique and brilliant way to start off the service year,” said Caroline Ledlie, who leads the AmeriCorps program at our Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus in Georgia. “The AmeriCorps members moved into our two campsites on campus the evening before and were ready to go at 8 a.m. Saturday to make the new playground a reality.”

In addition to the Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus AmeriCorps team, the volunteer force of more than 200 who came out to build the new playground received support from other Georgia AmeriCorps teams, among them AmeriCorps VISTA members from Jumpstart Atlanta, GSU Team AmeriCorps and the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism, along with a Georgia Commission staff member.

“We got so much support from AmeriCorps teams in Georgia, we actually had to turn away some,” Ledlie said. “This is a true testament to their commitment to service.”

The Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus will host a leadership training for AmeriCorps members in October.

“We think this will be a nice opportunity to allow the other teams who know us well to actually see our campus and members at service,” Ledlie said.
