Youth Villages therapeutic drumming instructors rock out at drum camp
Each year, therapeutic drumming instructors from the Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus travel to Little Switzerland, N.C., for the Blue Ridge Drum and Dance camp.
This year, nine AmeriCorps trainees, Michael Gordon from the Youth Villages Bartlett Campus, three classroom teachers, Sadi Sobhan and Program Coordinator Tom Harris attended the camp.
Seven African drumming teachers immerse students in West African drumming, including classes in djembe, dunun, krin, balaphone, kora, African dance and more. Harris and his students also tune and repair drums during the camp.
Two dununs (bass drums) were raffled to benefit Inner Harbour’s therapeutic drumming program, raising more than $3,300, which pays for African dance classes for all of the students at the campus for two months.
